It was a Tuesday night, sometime around 2010, and my phone rang with a call from Hawaii.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Patrick \u2014 my old high school basketball teammate, then a Marine officer stationed about as far from my Georgia apartment as you can get while staying under the same flag \u2014 had a question. Not “how are you.” Not “what’s new.” Just: “You said you could make a dating site for gamers, right?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Yeah. I’ll need your help, but yes \u2014 we can do it.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Alright \u2014 we’re doing it then.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I will never forget that phone call. And this week, while we’ve been publishing about long-distance relationships, it occurred to me that I’ve been sitting on a relevant credential this whole time: LFGdating itself is a long-distance success story. Not a romance \u2014 settle down \u2014 but the same machine, running the same mechanics. Two people, 4,200 miles apart, trying to build something real through screens and scheduled calls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What 4,200 miles actually takes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Here’s what building a company with someone five time zones away looks like. You schedule calls the way other people schedule dentist appointments. You learn exactly what time “after work” means in someone else’s ocean. You end late-night sessions mid-sentence because one of you has a 4:45 a.m. formation and the other has first period sophomores in seven hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My routine in those years: teach all day, grade papers until seven, then go into LFGdating mode until eleven or midnight. Pat’s: up at 4:45 a.m. to put in his hours before the Corps got the rest of him. Our overlap window was thin and non-negotiable, so we treated it like raid time. You show up. You show up prepared. You do not waste the window.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Every session had to be chosen, scheduled, and protected. Every conversation had a purpose because conversations were scarce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I’ve come to believe that’s not a workaround. That’s an advantage. Scarcity forced us to say the important things instead of coasting on proximity. When Pat finally moved back to Woodstock in 2012 and we could sit across a table at a coffee shop \u2014 same order every time, Jimmy John’s, tuna for me \u2014 we didn’t start from zero. We arrived with two years of communication muscle that most co-founders never build. The distance hadn’t delayed the real work. The distance had been<\/em> the real work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Researchers who study long-distance couples keep finding versions of this same thing \u2014 deliberate communication runs deeper than default communication. We lived it before we ever read it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why LFG works the way it does<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

So when people ask why LFGdating doesn’t treat distance like a defect \u2014 why the app<\/a> includes long-distance match filters as a feature you’d actually want, why we never buried far-away matches like an embarrassing secret \u2014 this essay is the answer. The two of us are constitutionally incapable of believing distance kills connection, because we’re a counterexample. The window is what you make it<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If you’re in the early days of something long-distance right now \u2014 or wondering whether to let something long-distance start \u2014 my only advice is the thing 4,200 miles taught me: protect the window. The scheduled call, the standing duo night, the overlap hour between time zones. Everything Pat and I built came out of a thin, jealously guarded slice of shared time that neither of us was willing to waste.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Distance was never the problem. Distance was just the terrain. What matters is whether both people keep showing up \u2014 and whether, when someone calls from an ocean away and says “we’re doing it then,” you say yes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
