In app years, 2012 is the Bronze Age. The year LFGdating opened its beta, the swipe hadn’t conquered the world yet, “growth hacking” was a fresh coinage people said without wincing, and dating startups were pitching engagement curves to anyone with a checkbook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Thirteen years later, most of those apps are gone, merged, or pivoted into something their founders wouldn’t recognize. LFGdating is still here, still independent, still one site for one community. This week the blog is about how to choose a dating platform \u2014 so it seems fair to show you the inside of ours, including the roads we didn’t take.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Every couple of years, the same conversations found us. Make it a swipe app \u2014 that’s where the market went. Add engagement mechanics \u2014 streaks, daily rewards, the slot-machine stuff. Open the doors wider \u2014 why only gamers? Every one of those suggestions was, by conventional startup logic, correct. Swiping is stickier. Engagement mechanics inflate the metrics investors read. Bigger funnels mean bigger numbers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We said no to all of it, repeatedly, sometimes to people much richer than us. Not because we’re contrarians \u2014 Pat is the least contrarian human in the Marine Corps’ long history of producing extremely direct men \u2014 but because every one of those moves optimizes the same thing: time spent inside the app. And time-in-app was never our scoreboard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Since this is a week about choosing platforms, let me tell you what a platform looks like from the other side of the door, at the very beginning. February 2013, last day of semester finals, and I’m on an elliptical at the gym when my phone buzzes: “Congratulations! You have successfully created a profile on LFGdating!” My first thought was that I hadn’t created a profile. My second thought was that someone else had \u2014 our first ever member, a real human being who looked at this thing Pat and I built on opposite sides of the Pacific and decided it was worth trusting with their love life. I about fell off the elliptical. Then the intercom announced school was closing for a blizzard, and I went home, made coffee, and kept building.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I bring this up because that feeling \u2014 a stranger trusting you with the most hopeful thing they do all year \u2014 never wore off, and it’s the actual reason the pivots never happened. You don’t add slot-machine mechanics to something people trusted you with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I’ve written this before and I’ll keep writing it: LFGdating has two bottom lines, and the financial one is second. The first is how many people are meeting and communicating every day. The purest signal we get is a specific kind of email \u2014 a member canceling their subscription because they met someone. When that email arrives, nobody in this company is sad. That’s basically every great holiday wrapped into one notification.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Build a company where that email is the win condition and the product decisions make themselves. You don’t add streak mechanics to keep someone swiping, because you’re not trying to keep them. You charge a modest subscription instead of farming attention, because the subscription filters out spammers and pays for actual humans to review every profile \u2014 which we’ve done for every single profile since the beginning. You put your personal email in the support flow, because when the community is the product, distance from the community is rot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Thirteen years of refusing to pivot compounds in ways that are hard to see from outside. The community trusts the door policy, because the door policy has never changed. The verification is human because it’s always been human. The founders answer email because we’ve always answered email \u2014 I’ve walked out of a date night to do it, which my wife has forgiven me for, mostly. None of this is a feature we shipped last quarter. It’s sediment. It only accumulates in one direction, and only if you stay in the lane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Here’s the takeaway that makes this more than founder nostalgia: when you choose a dating platform, you’re choosing whose incentives you live inside. Every platform’s design flows downhill from its scoreboard. If the scoreboard is engagement, you are the crop. If the scoreboard is successful exits \u2014 people meeting, pairing off, and leaving happy \u2014 then every design decision bends toward getting you out the door with someone worth leaving for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
