Fourteen years later, people occasionally read that word \u2014 mature<\/em> \u2014 as a demographic gate, like we card people at the door. This week the blog has been about dating as an adult gamer, so it feels like the right moment to explain what that sentence actually meant, why we wrote it, and why I’ve watched the entire gaming population slowly walk over to where we were already standing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n When Patrick called me from Hawaii with the idea, we weren’t kids. He was a Marine officer with formations at dawn. I was a high school English teacher grading essays until seven and building this site until midnight. We had jobs, obligations, real schedules \u2014 and we were both gamers, and both had spent our twenties discovering that mainstream dating sites had no idea what to do with people like us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The sites of that era assumed either endless-free-time twentysomethings or a beige, hobby-less adulthood. Twenty-two-year-olds can pass that bar; some fifty-year-olds can’t. The teenagers of the 2000s became the thirty-somethings of today and simply kept playing. The average player is now solidly in their mid-thirties \u2014 our members stopped being the outliers of gaming and became its median. “Mature gamer” went from a niche we defended to a description of the hobby’s center. We didn’t pivot to adults. Adulthood pivoted to us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Fourteen years of this means we’ve watched the whole arc, repeatedly. First messages that became first dates. First dates that became the cancellation email we celebrate \u2014 the one that says “I met someone, and it’s your fault.” Wedding photos in the inbox. The occasional baby announcement, which never stops being surreal when you remember it started with two profiles our team once human-reviewed on a Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Pat and I aged through it too. We built this thing as young men with side-project energy; we run it now as men with families, day jobs, and a sharper understanding of exactly what our members mean when they say they don’t have time to waste.
