And it&#8217;s about to go into the busiest four months of the dating year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So: patch notes. Eight fixes, thirty minutes total, no new photos required, no personality transplant. Do it this weekend with something on in the background and you&#8217;re set through February.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why now and not October 1<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because profiles written by people who urgently want a result read exactly like that. There&#8217;s a tightness to them \u2014 too many qualifiers, too much explaining, a whiff of please. Profiles written by someone mildly amused to be doing this on a Sunday afternoon read like a person you&#8217;d want to talk to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You cannot fake that tone in November. You can just have it in August. That&#8217;s the whole argument for doing this now, and it&#8217;s the same argument <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lfgdating.com\/gamer-dating-blog\/cuffing-season-for-gamers-2026\">Monday&#8217;s guide to the season<\/a> makes at length: the season is a deadline, not a start date.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The tune-up<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Replace the lead photo (6 minutes)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first photo is doing most of the work, and it is usually the worst one you own \u2014 a cropped group shot from a wedding two years ago where you look startled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Do this exact thing:<\/strong> find a photo where (a) it is unambiguously your face, (b) you are not wearing sunglasses, (c) your eyes are doing something, and (d) you look like you&#8217;re mid-conversation rather than mid-portrait. If you don&#8217;t have one, that&#8217;s a ten-minute problem: good light near a window, phone propped on a stack of books, self-timer, talk to someone off-camera while it fires. Take forty. Keep one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Delete on sight:<\/strong> the fish. The bathroom mirror. The one where you cropped an ex out and their arm is still there. The car selfie. Any photo where your face is under 15% of the frame.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Cut the games list from twelve to three (3 minutes)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A list of twelve games is a wall. Nobody reads a wall \u2014 they scan it, find nothing to grab, and swipe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Do this exact thing:<\/strong> pick three. One that says what you play <em>now<\/em>, one that says what you&#8217;d stay up too late for, and one that&#8217;s a little embarrassing or a little old and tells someone something real about you. &#8220;Currently: [thing]. Forever: [thing]. Still defending: [thing].&#8221; Three is an invitation. Twelve is a r\u00e9sum\u00e9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Rewrite the first line so it isn&#8217;t a r\u00e9sum\u00e9 (5 minutes)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most bios open with employment, city, and height, which is a passport, not a person. The first line is prime real estate and should be the most <em>you<\/em> sentence in the whole thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Do this exact thing:<\/strong> take the funniest or most specific true sentence anywhere in your current bio and move it to the top. If there isn&#8217;t one, write one now \u2014 a small confession works better than a big claim. &#8220;I have opinions about inventory management systems&#8221; beats &#8220;adventurous foodie who loves to laugh&#8221; every time, because one of them is a real human and the other is a stock photo of a person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Add one weird specific (2 minutes)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Specificity is the entire game. Broad traits are unfalsifiable and therefore weightless; details are sticky and, crucially, <em>repliable<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Do this exact thing:<\/strong> add one sentence containing a proper noun, a number, or a strange preference. Not &#8220;I like coffee.&#8221; Something like: I make the coffee in a specific way and will explain it unprompted. I have beaten one particular boss more times than is reasonable. I own an unnecessary number of dice. One line. That&#8217;s it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. Answer &#8220;what does a good Saturday look like&#8221; honestly (4 minutes)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Everybody answers this aspirationally \u2014 hiking, brunch, spontaneous road trip \u2014 and everybody is lying, and both people know it, so it transmits nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Do this exact thing:<\/strong> describe an actual good Saturday you had recently. If it was nine hours indoors and a very good sandwich, write that. The person you want is the one whose face does something warm when they read it, and you cannot find that person while describing a stranger&#8217;s Saturday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">6. Delete every negative clause (3 minutes)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Go through and remove every sentence that starts with &#8220;no,&#8221; &#8220;not looking for,&#8221; &#8220;please don&#8217;t,&#8221; or &#8220;if you&#8217;re X, swipe left.&#8221; Every single one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Why:<\/strong> each of those is a scar from a bad past interaction, and it reads to a stranger as bracing for impact. Five of them and the profile&#8217;s whole mood becomes defensive \u2014 which is a shame, because the actual boundaries you have are fine and you can state them warmly and positively. &#8220;Looking for something serious&#8221; carries the same information as &#8220;not here for hookups&#8221; and doesn&#8217;t start the relationship with a complaint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Do this exact thing:<\/strong> for each negative you delete, ask what you <em>do<\/em> want, and write that instead. You&#8217;ll usually end up with fewer lines and a better profile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">7. Put one openable hook in the last line (3 minutes)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The most common failure in online dating isn&#8217;t rejection. It&#8217;s silence \u2014 the profile someone likes but has no idea how to start a conversation with. Make it easy for them. This is a kindness to shy people, and shy people are a large and excellent portion of the population.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Do this exact thing:<\/strong> end with something that has a door in it. A mild wrong opinion. An unfinished choice. &#8220;Currently accepting recommendations for something to play that doesn&#8217;t require me to be good at it.&#8221; Anything a stranger can respond to without having to invent a personality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">8. Say what you&#8217;re looking for, in plain words (4 minutes)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The last one, the one everyone skips, and the one that saves the most time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Do this exact thing:<\/strong> one sentence, no hedging, no irony. &#8220;Looking for something real, not in a rush.&#8221; &#8220;Would like a partner, not a pen pal.&#8221; &#8220;Open to seeing where it goes, but I&#8217;m not doing a four-month thing.&#8221; Whatever&#8217;s true.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This costs you nothing and filters everything. One clear sentence in your profile is the cheapest possible insurance against it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The 30-second audit<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Read the whole thing back and ask three questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Could a stranger reply to this without effort?<\/strong> If there&#8217;s no obvious opening, add one.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Does anything here describe a category instead of a person?<\/strong> &#8220;Loves food, travel, and music&#8221; describes eight billion people. Cut or specify.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Does it sound like me on a good day?<\/strong> Not your best day, where you&#8217;re performing. A good ordinary one. That&#8217;s the voice that survives a first date, because it&#8217;s the one that shows up to it.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The day after<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Don&#8217;t sit and refresh. Do one thing: send two messages to people whose profiles you actually read, referencing the specific thing you actually read. Two. Not twenty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then close the app and go do something else.
