Are you thinking about your ex? Are you moving fast? Do your friends have concerns? Congratulations, you’re on the rebound, here’s an ad for a meditation app.

We’re going to do this differently. Below are seven signs, but every one of them is something a study actually measured, with the receipt attached. And before we start, a twist that the listicles leave out because it ruins the premise.

First, the twist: “rebound” isn’t the insult you think

In the only prospective study of rebound relationships we could find, the people who started dating again sooner after a breakup reported higher well-being, higher self-esteem and more confidence in their own desirability than the people who waited longer, and were no more hung up on their ex. We covered the timing research yesterday: three datasets, no waiting period, no penalty for going sooner.

So “rebound” as a label for speed is meaningless. What the same study also found is that the fastest rebounders did specific things that the slower ones didn’t, and those things were the actual problem. That’s the comparison that matters. Not rebound versus ready as a matter of dates on a calendar. Rebound behaviors versus ready behaviors, which you can check today.

Seven of them. Score yourself honestly.

Seven signs, each with a receipt

1. Who are you dating at?

The clearest rebound marker in the data wasn’t speed. It was motive. Among people who’d recoupled quickly, a shorter gap between relationships went with a stronger reported desire for vengeance toward the ex. The authors read this as one reason people rebound at all: to vent anger and make a point.

Rebound: some part of you hopes the ex sees this. Ready: you’d be doing exactly the same thing if the ex had moved to Antarctica with no internet.

2. The comparison reflex

Across both studies, people who’d spent less time single were more likely to compare their new partner to their ex. The researchers describe it as the past relationship “coloring” the new one: using the old partner as the template for understanding the new person.

Rebound: the new person is being graded on a curve set by someone else. Ready: you can describe what you like about them without the word “unlike.”

3. The ex is still in the group chat

In the prospective study, fast rebounders reported more contact with their ex, and contact is not neutral. In a four-week daily diary study of people after a serious breakup, contact with the former partner slowed the decline of both love and sadness. Being in a new relationship while maintaining the old channel is running two saves at once, and the game doesn’t support it.

Rebound: you still know what they had for lunch. Ready: the channel is closed, and closing it wasn’t dramatic. It was just done.

4. You know their new profile picture

Contact’s quieter sibling. Among 464 people, checking an ex’s Facebook page was associated with more current distress, more negative feelings, more longing and less personal growth, after controlling for offline contact, personality and how the breakup went. The same study found that staying online “friends” without actively looking produced less longing but also less growth, which is the internet’s version of leaving the door unlocked so you don’t have to admit you’re keeping it shut.

Rebound: “I just happened to see.” Ready: you genuinely don’t know, and you noticed that you don’t know, and it felt fine.

5. “It’s over” vs. “it’s not fair”

In a study that tracked sadness and anger day by day for a month after a breakup, acceptance of the relationship’s end was the mechanism that carried people out of sadness, while lingering love, anger and preoccupation lowered the odds of recovering within the study window. Acceptance isn’t a mood. It’s a sentence you can say without immediately appending a “but.”

Rebound: the loudest sentence in your head is about what should have happened. Ready: the loudest sentence is about what’s next, and it doesn’t have their name in it.

6. Can you finish the sentence “I am…”?

Here’s the one variable that predicted post-breakup distress more uniquely than any other. Across three studies, breakups reduced self-concept clarity, and that reduced clarity uniquely predicted how much distress people felt. A rebound, in the bad sense, is what you get when you try to fix a blurry self by borrowing someone else’s outline.

The fix is measurable too. In a randomized study of 210 recently separated adults, the group assigned to four structured reflection sessions regained self-concept clarity faster, which explained their reduced intrusive thoughts and loneliness.

Rebound: “I am…” stalls, or every answer routes through the relationship. Ready: three answers, fast, none of them about them. Your games count. Your weird hobby counts. The friend group you rebuilt counts most.

7. The fear-of-being-single tell

The last sign is about why you want the new person at all. In a series of experiments with anxiously attached people, the group most likely to stay stuck on an ex, simply being led to believe they’d easily find a new partner reduced their longing for the old one. That’s good news, and the authors say so: focusing on someone new can be an adaptive part of recovery. But the university’s own write-up flagged the catch: if the eagerness is about escaping singleness rather than wanting this person, you may pick the wrong person, or an unavailable one.

Rebound: the new person’s main qualification is that they’re here. Ready: you could be single for a while and be okay, and you’re choosing not to be because of who they are.

Scoreboard: what “ready” looks like

Count your “ready” answers.

6–7: You’re not on the rebound. You’re just dating, and the timing research says the calendar has nothing to add.

4–5: You’re close, and you know exactly which two things to fix. Usually it’s signs 3 and 4, and the fix is the mute button.

2–3: The data says you’d probably still feel better dating than not, but the things you’d carry into it are the things that damage the new relationship. Work the self-concept problem first. It goes faster than you think.

0–1: This isn’t a dating problem yet, and the kindest move is to not make it one. See the next section.

What to do if you scored “rebound”

Nothing dramatic. Three moves, in order.

Close the channels. Mute, unfollow, archive. Not as a statement. As hygiene. Signs 3 and 4 are the two most fixable items on this list and the ones with the strongest evidence behind them.

Do the reflection on purpose. The self-concept study’s participants weren’t in therapy; they answered structured questions about themselves, repeatedly. Journal. Talk to a friend who asks real questions. Re-level the hobby you dropped. You know how to grind a stat.

Then date for the right reason. The thing new connections reliably gave people in the research was confidence in their own desirability, not revenge, not a distraction, not an exit from being alone. That’s a low bar, and one good conversation clears it. On the LFGdating app that conversation starts from what you play, with a human-reviewed profile on the other end, which makes it a lot easier to be there for the person instead of for the scoreboard.

One thing we’ll say plainly, because this week is about a hard subject: if the “0–1” score comes with a low mood that isn’t lifting, or with thoughts of hurting yourself, that’s a conversation for a health care provider, not a self-check on a dating blog. A new relationship is not a treatment, and nothing in this research suggests otherwise.

The part where we’re honest about the studies

The rebound study’s prospective sample was 77 people, 27 of whom recoupled; it was mostly college-aged and mostly women, and the authors say a gender-balanced replication is needed. The diary studies had 58 participants. Correlations can’t establish direction. What these seven signs have going for them is not that they’re proven laws; it’s that each one was measured by someone, in real people, after real breakups, which is seven more receipts than the article you read last time. The full guide to dating after a breakup has the rest of the evidence and the New Game+ framing that ties it together.

Every ‘signs of a rebound’ list is vibes.
