On February 26 of this year, the fourth version of the LFGdating app went live on iOS. I have shipped an app before. The first one went out in May of 2019, and I remember that day as pure adrenaline: refreshing the store page, texting Pat screenshots, feeling like we’d built a spaceship in a garage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

February felt different, and it took me a while to figure out why. It wasn’t less exciting. It was exciting in the way a second run through a game is exciting. You know the map. You know where you died last time. And you’re carrying a full inventory into a level that, the first time, you walked into with a wooden sword.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gamers have a name for that. New Game+. You start over, but you keep what you leveled. I’ve been thinking about it all year, and not just about the app.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first run<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The 2019 apps were good. I’ll defend them. They were also our first time doing that particular thing, and the first time you do anything you are wrong in ways you cannot see yet. You find out by being wrong in public, which is the only way anyone ever finds out anything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pat and I have been doing this since a phone call from Hawaii in 2010, through a beta in January 2012 and a real launch in February 2013. Somewhere in there I nearly fell off an elliptical when the first member ever signed up. The website has changed plenty since then. But the app was a new kind of first run, and it taught us things the website never could have, because people use their phones differently than they use a browser, and they’ll tell you exactly how, if you answer their emails. We do. Within twenty-four hours, from our personal accounts. That’s been the rule since the beginning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So by the time we decided to redesign the whole thing, we had an inventory. Not code, necessarily. Knowledge. What people actually tap first. What they never open. Which screen makes someone put the phone down and which one makes them write a first message. None of that existed in 2019. All of it existed in 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why “completely redesigned” is the honest phrase<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Our app page says version four is “completely redesigned,” and I want to be precise about what that means, because it’s the whole point of this essay. It does not mean we started from zero. It means we started over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Those are different things. Starting from zero is a new character: no levels, no gear, no idea where the traps are. Starting over is the same character on a second run. We threw out what didn’t work. We kept every scar. The February app and the March Android version and the May launch in the U.K. are what thirteen years of knowing our members looks like when you’re finally willing to put the old version down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And putting it down was the hard part. Not the building. The letting go. I was attached to the first run. I’d bled for it. There is a version of me that would still be patching the 2019 app in 2030, out of loyalty to the guy who shipped it, and that version of me would be doing our members a disservice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The part about you<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Here’s why I’m telling you this in a week about dating after a breakup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We hear from members who come back. Not to LFG specifically, though that happens too, and we never treat it as a failure; the entire business is built on people leaving because they found someone, and if that someone didn’t last, the door is exactly where they left it. I mean people who come back to dating at all. Who had a thing that ended, and are standing at the character-creation screen again, and are convinced they have to build a level-one character because the last run didn’t finish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You don’t. You can’t, actually. You’re not the person who started the last relationship. You’re the person who finished it, and that person knows things the first one didn’t. What you actually need from someone, as opposed to what you thought you needed. What you’ll put up with and what you won’t. Which of your own patterns you’d like to not repeat. That’s not baggage. That’s gear. It’s the difference between a wooden sword and a full inventory, and the only way to have it is to have done a run that ended.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I’ve read the research we pulled together for the rest of this week, and I’ll leave the citations to those posts. What I’ll say from my side of the screen is that in thirteen years I’ve watched a lot of people start their second run, and the ones who do it well have one thing in common. They don’t pretend the first run didn’t happen, and they don’t stay in it either. They put the old version down, with respect, and they carry the knowledge forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What I’d say to someone on their New Game+<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The same thing I’d say to 2019 me, if I could.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You’re going to be tempted to keep patching the old save. Don’t. It ended, and it’s allowed to have ended, and you’re allowed to have loved it. Both of those are true at the same time and neither one is an argument.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You’re going to feel like a beginner. You’re not. Watch yourself skip the tutorial. Watch how much faster you recognize the trap on the second floor. That isn’t luck. That’s you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And you’re going to want to do it perfectly this time, because you know so much more. You won’t. Nobody does. We shipped version four and we are already writing down what’s wrong with it, because that’s what a run is. The point was never to finish clean. The point was to play it with everything you’d learned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
