Not the tired of a long raid night, which is earned, but the tired of the fortieth profile in a row, when you notice you’ve been saying no on reflex for ten minutes and couldn’t describe a single face you passed on.

That tiredness has been studied, and the studies are better than the discourse about them. This is the deep dive on why swiping wears you down: three experiments, one mechanism, and a gamer’s explanation of why the whole thing looks so familiar.

Nobody is bad at this. The format is.

Start with the frame, because it changes how you read everything after it. The dominant story about swipe fatigue is a story about you: you’re too picky, you’re not picky enough, you’re on it too much, you need better photos. The research doesn’t support that story. The research finds that ordinary people, doing the task as designed, produce the same worsening pattern in the same order. The effect belongs to the stack, not the swiper.

Experiment one: the rejection mind-set

In 2020, Tila Pronk and Jaap Denissen published three studies in Social Psychological and Personality Science under the title “A Rejection Mind-Set.” Their hypothesis was blunt: continuous access to a seemingly unlimited supply of potential partners makes people more pessimistic and more rejecting as they go.

Study one put 315 single adults through a swipe-style accept-or-reject task, accepting or rejecting either 45 or 90 photos of hypothetical partners one at a time. Acceptance dropped as the sequence went on, and most of the drop happened inside the first dozen photos. That detail matters: the numbness isn’t a late-session problem. It sets in almost immediately.

Study two raised the stakes. 158 Dutch students rated photos of people who were actually available, knowing that if both sides accepted they’d be matched for real. The rejection pattern replicated with real consequences on the line, and for women, the odds of actually getting a match declined over the sequence as well.

Study three asked why. 305 participants worked through 50 photos in five blocks, answering questions after each block about how satisfied they were with what they were seeing and how successful they felt. Both measures fell block by block, and those declines explained the rising rejection. Across all three studies, the chance of accepting any given person fell by about 27% from the first option to the last.

The authors also point to earlier work suggesting people choose best from a set of roughly 20 to 50 options. Hold onto that number. It comes back.

One thing this paper is often quoted for that we’re leaving out: the line in its introduction about the biggest app showing users 140 profiles a day. That figure is sourced to a marketing blog, not to a study, so it doesn’t appear anywhere in this week’s posts. Good research can still have a soft citation in its opening paragraph.

Experiment two: 24 fish versus 6

The rejection mind-set is about what happens during the stack. Jonathan D’Angelo and Catalina Toma’s 2017 experiment in Media Psychology is about what happens after you pick.

Online daters chose a partner from a set of either 6 or 24 profiles. Some were told they could change their mind later; some weren’t. Then the researchers waited a week and asked how people felt about their choice. The people who chose from 24 were less satisfied with their pick than the people who chose from 6, and more likely to want to swap. Reversibility on its own didn’t change satisfaction, but the combination of a big pool and a reversible choice produced the least satisfied group in the study.

That combination, a large pool with an always-available undo, is a fair description of every infinite-feed app. The design doesn’t just make choosing harder. It makes you like your choice less once you’ve made it, which is a strange thing to build into a product whose stated purpose is helping people like each other.

Experiment three: FOMO, fatigue, and handing the wheel to the algorithm

The newest study closes the loop. Alice Binder, Anja Stevic, Jörg Matthes, and Marina Thomas ran a two-wave panel of young dating app users, 521 at the second wave, published in New Media & Society. They were interested in a slide that a lot of people will recognize: from “I might miss someone if I stop” to “I’m too tired to judge” to “the app probably knows better than I do.”

They found each step. Fear of missing out on potential partners predicted decision fatigue, and both excessive swiping and decision fatigue predicted greater trust in the app’s algorithm. Trust didn’t feed back the other way; it wasn’t that people who believed in the algorithm swiped more. It was that people who swiped until they were exhausted started believing in the algorithm, which the authors describe as a relief strategy. The same abstract notes that more and more dating apps use algorithms specifically to keep engagement high.

So: the feed manufactures fear of missing out, which manufactures fatigue, which manufactures surrender, which keeps you in the feed. Pew Research Center’s 2023 survey found that only 21% of U.S. adults think dating algorithms can predict whether two people will fall in love. The panel data suggests a lot of the people who do believe it got there by being worn down.

Why gamers see this instantly

If you’ve played any gacha game with a conscience, you know what a pity system is: a guarantee that after some number of pulls you get the thing, because the designers understood that a variable-reward loop with no floor is not exciting, it’s abusive. The games that skip the pity system are the ones people warn each other about.

An infinite swipe feed is a gacha banner with no pity timer. The near-miss is the product. And the three experiments above describe, in order, what a floorless loop does to a player: the pulls start feeling the same (rejection mind-set), the thing you finally pull feels worse than it should (24 versus 6), and eventually you stop reading the drop rates and let the game auto-pull for you (trust in the algorithm).

The other thing gamers know is that a bounded loop feels completely different from an unbounded one. A daily that takes twelve minutes and then ends respects you. A daily that quietly refills is a different genre of product. The 20-to-50 window the researchers keep landing on is, in practice, a description of a loop with an end.

The honest asterisk

The “too much choice is paralyzing” idea has a famous origin story involving jam samples, and it’s worth knowing that story is shakier than its fame. A 2010 meta-analysis of 50 choice-overload experiments found an average effect close to zero, with a lot of variation between studies. Choice overload is real in some contexts and absent in others.

That is precisely why this post leans on the dating-specific experiments rather than the general principle. Pronk and Denissen and D’Angelo and Toma didn’t ask people to pick jam. They asked people to pick people, and the effect showed up. The Binder panel and the twelve-week burnout study we covered in Monday’s guide add the time dimension: it gets worse, not better, with practice. Correlational pieces of that picture can’t prove direction, and we’ve said so. But the experimental pieces can, and they do.

What this means for you

Do fewer, better. That’s the entire practical implication of three experiments, and it’s less glib than it sounds, because “fewer” is a property of the format you choose, not of your self-control inside a format built to defeat it.

We wrote about this from the other side in Monday’s complete guide to dating app burnout, and tomorrow’s post puts the two formats side by side: infinite swipe versus a daily set of matches, round by round. The reason the LFGdating app serves a small number of daily matches instead of a bottomless feed isn’t that we couldn’t build a feed. It’s that we read the drop rates.

Three experiments, one mechanism: the longer the stack, the more you reject, the less you like your pick, the more you trust the algorithm.
