Search “dating app burnout statistics” and the same number comes back from every direction: 78%. It’s a real number from a real poll. It’s also a weaker kind of evidence than the headlines built on it, and the stronger evidence, the experiments and the twelve-week study, gets quoted far less because it doesn’t fit in a tweet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This is the ledger. Every figure below links to the place it was actually measured, at the point where it’s mentioned. The last section is the numbers we went looking for and refused to use, because a data post that only shows you what it found isn’t telling you much about how it looked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In spring 2024, Forbes Health commissioned the polling firm OnePoll to survey 1,000 U.S. adults who had used a dating app in the past year<\/a>, with a stated margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 points. Asked how often they felt emotionally, mentally, or physically exhausted by dating apps, 78% said sometimes, often, or always<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n What the same poll said that the headlines dropped: women reported burnout at 80% and men at 74%<\/a>, and the generational spread was Millennials 80%, Gen Z 79%, Gen X 78%<\/a>, which is inside the margin of error and means the “Gen Z is uniquely burned out” framing isn’t supported by the poll being cited for it. The self-reported reasons, in order: inability to find a good connection (40%), being disappointed by people (35%), feeling rejected (27%), repetitive conversations across multiple matches (24%), the swiping itself (22%), and time spent (21%)<\/a>. 41% said they had been ghosted and 38% said they had been catfished.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n How to weigh it: this is a commissioned online poll with a named methodology, not a peer-reviewed study or a probability sample. “Sometimes” is doing a lot of work in that 78%. It’s useful as a temperature reading and shouldn’t be used as more than that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Pew’s American Trends Panel is a probability-based national sample, which is the standard the poll above doesn’t meet. In its October 2019 survey of 4,860 U.S. adults, people who had used a dating site or app in the past year said the experience left them feeling more frustrated (45%) than hopeful (28%)<\/a>. 71% of users said it was very common for people to lie to appear more desirable.<\/a> On volume, 43% of recent users felt they hadn’t received enough messages and 17% felt they’d received too many<\/a>, with a sharp gender split: 57% of men said not enough versus 24% of women, while 30% of women said too many versus 6% of men<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Pew’s July 2022 survey of 6,034 adults found 30% of U.S. adults had ever used a dating site or app and 9% had in the past year<\/a>. Users split almost evenly on the experience, 53% positive to 46% negative<\/a>, with women at 48% positive and 51% negative<\/a>. On the theme of this week: 37% of all adults said people have too many options on these platforms, 43% said about the right amount, and 13% said not enough<\/a>. Among past-year users, 55% often or sometimes felt insecure about how many messages they got and 36% felt overwhelmed<\/a>; 54% of women had felt overwhelmed versus 25% of men, and 64% of men had felt insecure about the lack of messages versus 40% of women<\/a>. And only 21% of adults think dating algorithms could predict whether two people will fall in love<\/a>; 35% think they can’t and 43% aren’t sure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The number on the other side of the ledger: one in ten partnered adults met their current partner through a dating site or app, and one in five of those under 30 did<\/a>. It works for a lot of people. That’s compatible with it grinding a lot of others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Ofcom is the UK’s communications regulator, and unlike a poll it measures behaviour directly through a panel. Its 2024 Online Nation data found one in ten UK adults (4.9 million) used an online dating service in the year, but the most-used app lost 600,000 users, about 5%, and the second-largest operator dropped 300,000<\/a>. Dating services skewed heavily male, 65% to 35%<\/a>, which lines up with the message-volume imbalance Pew found. The age group that spent the longest on dating services, 55-to-64-year-olds, averaged 5 hours 43 minutes in the month<\/a>. This is the only independent, measured figure we found for the “people are leaving the apps” narrative; everything else in that genre traces back to company earnings calls or anecdotes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Across three studies published in Social Psychological and Personality Science<\/em> in 2020, participants working through a swipe-app-style stack of profiles became steadily more rejecting, and the chance of accepting any given person fell by about 27% from the first option to the last<\/a>. Sample sizes were 315, 158, and 305<\/a>; the second study used real, available partners with real matches, and in it women’s likelihood of a match declined across the sequence<\/a>. The decline was explained by falling satisfaction with the photos and falling perceived success. The paper cites earlier work putting the ideal choice set at roughly 20 to 50 options<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In a 2017 Media Psychology<\/em> experiment, online daters who picked a partner from a pool of 24 were, one week later, less satisfied with their choice than those who picked from 6, and more likely to want to change it<\/a>; the least satisfied group had chosen from the large pool with the option to reverse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A two-wave panel of young dating app users in New Media & Society<\/em>, 521 at the second wave<\/a>, found that fear of missing out on potential partners predicted decision fatigue, and that both excessive swiping and decision fatigue predicted greater trust in the app’s algorithm<\/a>, with no effect running the other way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The first longitudinal study of dating app burnout, also in New Media & Society<\/em>, surveyed 493 active single dating app users over four waves across 12 weeks, with a final sample of 190<\/a>. Emotional exhaustion and inefficacy increased over time. Depression, anxiety, and loneliness predicted more of both. Problematic use predicted more exhaustion but less inefficacy.<\/a> The attrition from 493 to 190 is a real limitation and the authors’ framing is careful: apps may worsen existing difficulties for vulnerable users.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A 2020 cross-sectional survey of 437 Australian adults in BMC Psychology<\/em> found swipe-app users had 2.51 times the odds of psychological distress and 1.91 times the odds of depression<\/a> compared with non-users, adjusting for age, gender, and sexual orientation. In the same sample, 40.4% of users said the apps had improved their self-esteem versus 28.7% who said the opposite, and 39.1% of current or past users had entered a serious relationship with someone they met on one<\/a>. Cross-sectional data can’t say which came first. Both halves of that paragraph are true at once.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A 2025 interview study in SN Social Sciences<\/em> talked to 27 dating app users<\/a> and concluded that fatigue is a shared social phenomenon rather than an individual weakness, arising from practices the format encourages, parallel dating, acceleration, non-commitment, and hardening into a negative self-fulfilling prophecy. Small sample, no percentages, and it’s the study that best explains why the numbers above feel the way they do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n These are the figures we went looking for because they’re everywhere, and left out because they don’t survive the trip back to a source.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Strip out the poll and the folklore and the measured picture is consistent. About half of users say the experience is positive and half don’t. Frustration outruns hope among recent users by a wide margin. The unbounded format, specifically, trains a rejection reflex within a dozen profiles, lowers satisfaction with the eventual choice, converts fear of missing out into fatigue and fatigue into surrender, and produces rising exhaustion over twelve weeks in the only longitudinal study that has looked. The people most at risk are the ones who arrived already dealing with depression, anxiety, or loneliness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That last finding is the one we’d ask you to read plainly rather than as a pitch. If it describes you, a different app is not the intervention and a partner is not a treatment; a health care provider is where that conversation belongs, and in the U.S. you can call or text 988 in a crisis.
