There are four ways to leave a match. You can say so. You can vanish. You can vanish but keep watching their stories. Or you can never quite leave, sending a “haha yeah” every eleven days so the thing never dies and never lives. Rage-quit, GG, spectator mode, and the friend who keeps sending party invites they’ll never accept.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
People argue about which one is kindest as if it’s a matter of taste. It isn’t. One of the four has been tested head-to-head against another in an actual experiment, and two more have data behind them. So here’s the comparison, round by round, with the scores.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The direct no.<\/strong> You tell the person it’s over. In the research this is called rejection, and in the experiment below it was defined as the disengager “directly communicat[ing] the decision to quit”<\/a> and giving an explicit reason.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Ghosting.<\/strong> You stop replying and never say why. The other person figures it out from the silence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Orbiting.<\/strong> Ghosting, except the ghoster “still visibly follows the former partner’s social networking activities”<\/a>: watching stories, liking posts, producing notifications from a person who won’t answer a message.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Breadcrumbing.<\/strong> Not an exit at all, which is the problem. Occasional messages, DMs and likes that keep you interested with no intention of anything progressing. The Spanish researchers who study it describe it as keeping someone “on hold”<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In 2022 a team at the University of Milano-Bicocca ran the experiment this whole debate needed. They randomly assigned adults to recall a real episode from the past five years in which they’d been ghosted, orbited, or rejected outright, then measured their emotions and how much each of four fundamental needs had been threatened. Those four needs come from the ostracism literature: belonging, self-esteem, control, and meaningful existence<\/a>. After dropping people who couldn’t recall a real episode, 176 remained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Here’s the scorecard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The authors’ summary: “compared to rejection, ghosting generally leads to worse outcomes, such as a higher threat to basic needs and feelings of exclusion.” Their explanation is the part worth memorizing. A direct no, even a clumsy one, is an assumption of responsibility. The person leaving says “this is my decision,” which gives you something to be angry at, something to file, and a door that is visibly closed. Ghosting removes the decision from view. You’re left, in their words, “at the total mercy of the disengagers’ decision,” which is exactly why control takes the hardest hit. It’s the difference between losing a match and having your opponent disconnect at match point so the result never posts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Now the other side of the ledger, because the argument for ghosting is always that it’s gentler. Gentler for whom?<\/p>\n\n\n\n A two-sample study of 595 recent breakups measured distress for everyone involved: people who ghosted, people who were ghosted, people who ended it directly, people who were told directly. The single biggest factor was role. Being the one who got dumped was far more distressing than being the one who did it, whichever way it happened. But within that, the strategy mattered in one place only. People who ended things directly were more distressed than people who ghosted, while recipients reported essentially the same distress whether they’d been ghosted or told to their face (2.74 vs. 2.73 on the distress scale in the first sample)<\/a>. When the researchers controlled for how committed the relationship had been, even that difference disappeared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n So the “gentler” exit doesn’t measurably reduce the recipient’s distress. It reduces the initiator’s. Combine that with round one, where the ghosted person also absorbs more exclusion and loses more control, and the ledger is lopsided in one direction. Ghosting is a discount for the person leaving, charged to the person left. Tuesday’s post<\/a> goes into why people take it anyway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The ghoster does pay something. Among people who’d been on both sides, their accounts of ghosting were more likely to express guilt and relief; their accounts of being ghosted were more likely to express sadness and hurt<\/a>. Guilt is a real cost. It’s just a much smaller one than the one on the other side, and it’s the only cost the ghoster chose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In the Milan experiment, orbited people landed in the middle on everything and were never statistically different from either group. The authors offered two readings. Maybe the occasional like acts as a buffer, a scrap of attention that softens the cut. Or maybe orbiting just drags the exclusion out over a longer time<\/a>, so it hurts a little less on any given day and a lot more in total. The study couldn’t tell the two apart, and it’s honest about that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n What orbiting definitely does is keep the loop open. Every story view is a notification from someone who has decided you’re not worth a sentence. If you’ve ever had a player leave your party and then sit in spectator mode watching you finish the match, you know the specific irritation. They didn’t want to play. They just wanted to see how it went.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This is where the data gets surprising. A Spanish study of 626 adults aged 18 to 40 looked at people who’d experienced ghosting or breadcrumbing repeatedly, three or more times in the past year from someone they’d dated. The breadcrumbed group reported lower satisfaction with life, more helplessness and more loneliness than people who’d experienced neither. The repeatedly ghosted group didn’t differ from the untouched group on any of the three.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n Read that carefully, because it’s easy to misread as “ghosting is fine.” The authors say explicitly that the null result doesn’t mean ghosted people felt no discomfort; the likeliest explanation is that ghosting, however much it hurts in the moment, at least ends, and people recover from things that end. Breadcrumbing doesn’t end. The authors compare it to an unpredictable reward schedule: you never know when the next crumb is coming, so you keep checking. It’s a login bonus that never pays out. A ghost at least lets you close the game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The ghosted aren’t off the hook emotionally, either. In the Dutch app study, 59% of ghosted people blamed the ghoster, but 37% blamed themselves<\/a>. That’s the control problem from round one in a different outfit: no explanation, so you write your own, and the one you write is usually worse than the real one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The head-to-head experiment deserves its weight, and also its limits. It was 176 people, mostly women, aged 18 to 36, at an Italian university. The relationships they recalled were long, about three years on average, and had ended about two years before. Nearly half of the ghosting episodes were friendships rather than romances, which the authors controlled for statistically. And they say plainly that their findings should not be generalized to what happens on dating apps after a few days of messaging<\/a>. Nobody has yet run this experiment on the three-messages-in ghost, which is the most common kind. The breadcrumbing study is cross-sectional and can’t say which way the arrow points. The breakup study is retrospective and its ghosting-is-less-distressing finding was exploratory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n What survives all of that is the direction. Across every design, silence never comes out ahead of a direct no for the person on the receiving end, and the only place it comes out ahead is for the person leaving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Ranked by damage to the other person, with the evidence we have: the direct no does the least, ghosting adds exclusion and lost control on top of the same sadness, orbiting probably spreads that over a longer time, and breadcrumbing is the one associated with worse well-being because it never lets anyone leave. Ranked by comfort to you in the moment: the reverse, which is the whole problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The gamer version writes itself. GG beats rage-quit. Rage-quit beats sitting in spectator mode. And the friend who keeps sending party invites they’ll never accept is the one you eventually have to remove from the list yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n If you’re the one leaving, the direct version is two lines and Friday has the scripts<\/a>.
