LFG stands for “Looking For Group.” Before it was the name of a dating site, it was the thing you typed into chat at 11 PM when you needed two more people for a dungeon. Some of those people turned into your regular squad. Some of them turned into your best friends. And every so often, one of them turns into the person you can’t stop thinking about once you’ve logged off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
If that’s where you are right now, you’re not doing something weird. You’re doing the most common thing in the research. This guide covers what science actually knows about dating a friend: how often it happens, why it happens, whether it’s a good idea, how to tell if it’s mutual, and how to bring it up without nuking the group chat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Pop culture treats friends-to-lovers like a plot twist. The data says it’s the main storyline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In 2021, a team of psychologists led by Danu Anthony Stinson pooled seven samples of people who were in relationships, 1,897 people in total, and asked a simple question: were you friends with your partner before you got romantically involved? Across the seven samples, 68% said yes<\/a>. That held for students and for crowdsourced adults, and for men (67%) and women (68%) almost identically<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Two groups stood out. Among same-gender and queer couples, 85% started as friends, compared with 68% of couples made up of a woman and a man<\/a> (that queer subsample was small, 84 people, so treat it as a strong signal rather than the final word). And 84% of married adults under 30 said their relationship began as a friendship, versus 69% of those over 30<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n So if you’ve ever felt like you were supposed to meet “the one” in some cinematic stranger moment, and instead you fell for the person who’s been healing you through raids for two years: congratulations, you’re the majority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Here’s the part that should make you raise an eyebrow. The same paper reviewed the research on how relationships begin. Of 85 published studies on romantic initiation, only 18% included the friends-first pathway at all, while 84% studied people who started out dating<\/a>. Relationship textbooks skewed the same way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In other words, decades of attraction research mostly studied strangers sizing each other up, which is roughly what dating apps also optimize for. The slow-build, side-quest-turned-main-quest version of love got ignored. That’s why so much advice about “falling for a friend” reads like guesswork. A lot of it is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n You’ll see headlines saying online dating “killed” meeting people through friends. That’s true, and it’s also a different thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Sociologist Michael Rosenfeld and colleagues tracked how American couples met using a nationally representative survey. Among heterosexual couples, meeting through friends fell from 33% of couples who met in 1995 to 20% of those who met in 2017<\/a>, while meeting online rose to 39% of couples who met in 2017<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That’s about introductions<\/em>: your friend setting you up with their coworker. What Stinson measured is whether you were already friends with the person<\/em> before it turned romantic. The setup is declining. The friendship pathway is still the most common route in the research. The internet didn’t kill friends-to-lovers. It killed the matchmaker friend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Three findings explain most of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Communication researcher Jeffrey Hall asked adults and new college students how much time they’d spent with new acquaintances and how close they’d become. His estimate: roughly 40 to 60 hours to become a casual friend, 80 to 100 hours to become a friend, and more than 200 hours to become a good or best friend<\/a>. Those are self-reported hours, and they’re about friendship, not romance. But if you’ve ever looked at your shared playtime on a co-op game and done a little math, you already get it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n “Familiarity breeds contempt” is a great line and a weak finding. In a set of experiments, Harry Reis and colleagues paired up strangers and randomly assigned them to talk once or up to eight times. The more the pairs interacted, the more they liked each other<\/a>, mostly because they felt more understood, more comfortable, and like they knew the other person better. One of those studies ran on online chats. Text-first closeness counts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In one study, students were randomly assigned seats at a first-day session. The people who happened to sit next to each other rated their friendship as stronger a year later<\/a>. A lot of who we love starts with who we happen to keep showing up next to. For gamers, the “seat” is your party slot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Online games are friendship machines. In a study of 912 players of online role-playing games, about three-quarters had made good friends inside the game<\/a>, and 42.8% had met online friends in real life<\/a>. Nearly two in five (39.3%) said they’d discuss sensitive things with gaming friends that they wouldn’t with offline friends<\/a>. That study is from 2007 and its players volunteered, so it’s not a census of all gamers. But it describes something most of us recognize: the squad is where people let their guard down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Put that next to the research above and the pattern is obvious. Games give you hours, repeated contact, a shared goal, and low-stakes conversation. That’s the exact recipe for closeness. Sometimes closeness stays friendship. Sometimes it doesn’t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Dating a friend has a cost that dating a stranger doesn’t: you can lose a friend. Nobody should pretend otherwise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n There’s also an attraction gap worth knowing about, at least in cross-sex friendships. In a study of 88 pairs of platonic cross-sex friends who filled out surveys in separate rooms, men reported more attraction to their female friend than women did to their male friend, and men overestimated how attracted their friend was to them<\/a>, while women tended to underestimate. In a second study, 32% of people listed attraction as a cost or complication of cross-sex friendship, compared with 6% who listed it as a benefit<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That research only covers friendships between men and women, so it doesn’t speak for everyone. The practical lesson still travels: your read on how your friend feels is a guess, and guesses run optimistic. Check before you leap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The honest answer: it’s not better or worse by default. It’s different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The best head-to-head comparison we found studied 137 married or cohabiting couples. Couples who fell in love at first sight got together faster, and they did not report lower relationship quality than couples who started as friends<\/a>. No study we found shows friends-first couples are happier or last longer. If you’ve read that claim somewhere, ask for the source. In Stinson’s student sample, friends-first couples had been friends for almost 22 months on average before it turned romantic<\/a> (the median was 12). That’s a lot of data on how someone handles a bad night, a loss streak, or a canceled plan. You’re not guessing who they are. You’re deciding whether you want more of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n There’s no research-certified checklist here, so this is experience, not science. Signals worth noticing:<\/p>\n\n\n\n None of these is proof. Most of them also describe a good friend. That’s why the only reliable test is a kind, clear conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The short version: one-on-one, not mid-raid, not in the group chat. Say what you feel, say what you’re hoping for, and give them an easy, no-penalty way to say no. Then make sure they know the friendship is safe either way, and mean it.
