Only one of them holds up. Here&#8217;s what peer-reviewed research and national surveys actually show about friends who fall for each other, with every number linked to where it came from, and a list of the numbers we refused to repeat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The headline number: about two-thirds<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1177\/19485506211026992\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>68%<\/strong> of people in relationships said they were friends with their partner before it turned romantic<\/a>, pooled across seven samples (1,897 people, collected 2002\u20132020, Canada and the US).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The individual samples ranged from <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1177\/19485506211026992\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">40% to 72.8%<\/a>. The low end came from the one sample that used a multiple-choice question instead of a yes\/no.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It barely differed by gender: <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1177\/19485506211026992\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">67% of men and 68% of women<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Who&#8217;s most likely to start as friends<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1177\/19485506211026992\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>85%<\/strong> of same-gender and queer couples started as friends, versus 68% of couples made up of a woman and a man<\/a>. That subgroup was small (84 people), so it&#8217;s a strong signal, not a settled fact.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1177\/19485506211026992\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>84%<\/strong> of married adults under 30 started as friends, versus 69% of married adults over 30<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How it unfolds<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>It takes a while.<\/strong> Friends-first students had been friends for <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1177\/19485506211026992\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">21.9 months on average (median 12, range 1 to 180 months)<\/a> before the relationship became romantic.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Usually nobody planned it.<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1177\/19485506211026992\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">70.3% said they just became friends and then became attracted<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1177\/19485506211026992\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">12% said they befriended their partner because they were already attracted, and 17.7% said their partner did<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Sometimes there&#8217;s a detour.<\/strong> Among married friends-first adults in one sample, <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1177\/19485506211026992\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">42% said they&#8217;d had a friends-with-benefits phase with their future spouse<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>It&#8217;s a popular preference.<\/strong> Asked the best way to meet a partner, <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1177\/19485506211026992\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">47.4% of students chose a friendship turning romantic, the top choice of 12<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1177\/19485506211026992\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Online dating was chosen by one person out of 298<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Science mostly studied the other third<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reviewing 85 published studies on how relationships begin, the same team found <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1177\/19485506211026992\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">only 18% included the friends-first pathway at all, while 84% studied people who started out dating<\/a>. The most common route to romance has been one of the least studied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The setup is fading. The friendship pathway isn&#8217;t.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Met through friends&#8221; and &#8220;were friends first&#8221; are different measurements, and they&#8217;re moving in different directions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Introductions are declining.<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1073\/pnas.1908630116\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Among US heterosexual couples, meeting through friends fell from 33% (couples who met in 1995) to 20% (couples who met in 2017)<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Online took the top spot.<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1073\/pnas.1908630116\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">39% of heterosexual couples who met in 2017 met online, up from 2% in 1995<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Across all partnered adults,<\/strong> Pew found <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/social-trends\/2020\/08\/20\/nearly-half-of-u-s-adults-say-dating-has-gotten-harder-for-most-people-in-the-last-10-years\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">32% first met their partner through friends or family, and 12% online<\/a>. That covers every existing couple, not just recent ones, which is why it looks so different from the 2017 figures.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Attraction inside friendships<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These findings come from platonic friendships between men and women, so they don&#8217;t describe every friendship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>On a 1\u20139 scale, <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1177\/0265407512443611\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">men rated their attraction to a female friend at 4.94 on average, and women rated their attraction to a male friend at 3.97<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1177\/0265407512443611\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Men overestimated how attracted their friend was to them; women underestimated it<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1177\/0265407512443611\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">32% of people listed attraction as a cost of cross-sex friendship, compared with 6% who listed it as a benefit<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What builds closeness<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Hours.<\/strong> One researcher estimated <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1177\/0265407518761225\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">about 40\u201360 hours to make a casual friend, 80\u2013100 hours for a friend, and 200+ hours for a good or best friend<\/a>, based on people&#8217;s own estimates.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Repetition.<\/strong> In randomly assigned online chats between strangers, <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1037\/a0022885\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pairs where someone wanted more contact rose from 17.6% after one chat to 62.5% after eight<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Disclosure.<\/strong> Strangers who spent 45 minutes on escalating personal questions <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1177\/0146167297234003\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported more closeness (4.06 vs 3.25) than pairs making small talk<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Gamers, specifically<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From a 2007 survey of 912 volunteer players of online role-playing games:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1089\/cpb.2007.9988\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">76.2% of men and 74.7% of women had made good friends in the game<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1089\/cpb.2007.9988\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">42.8% had met online friends in real life<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1089\/cpb.2007.9988\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">31.3% had been attracted to another player<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1089\/cpb.2007.9988\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">10.1% had developed a physical relationship with another player<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s an older, self-selected sample, not a census of gamers. It still shows how much of gaming is, at its core, people finding their people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Where the evidence runs out<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Is friends-first better?<\/strong> Not shown. In a study of 137 couples, <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1177\/0265407507079235\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">love-at-first-sight couples did not report lower relationship quality<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>What happens to the friendship after a no?<\/strong> We found no solid data. Anyone quoting a percentage is guessing.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Who&#8217;s missing?<\/strong> The friends-first data is mostly from Canada and the US, mostly from students and online survey panels, and includes few queer couples. Treat it as a strong pattern, not a universal law.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Numbers we refused<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>&#8220;Men and women can&#8217;t be just friends.&#8221;<\/strong> No study we found shows that. The research shows an attraction <em>gap<\/em>, not an impossibility.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>&#8220;Most people prefer to start as friends.&#8221;<\/strong> Close, but no. It was the top choice for 47.4% of one student sample: a plurality, not a majority, and not adults.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>&#8220;Friends-first relationships last longer.&#8221;<\/strong> No primary source supports it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>&#8220;39% of couples meet online.&#8221;<\/strong> That figure is heterosexual couples who met in 2017, not all couples.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>&#8220;The 36 questions make you fall in love.&#8221;<\/strong> The study measured closeness between strangers, not love.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>&#8220;X% of gamers find a partner in game.&#8221;<\/strong> The best-known study never measured that. It measured &#8220;physical relationships,&#8221; in a volunteer sample.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Dating-company &#8220;singles surveys&#8221; on friends-to-lovers.<\/strong> Commissioned polls aren&#8217;t independent research, so we left them out.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Want the practical side of all this?
