They message every day, they’ve had a few dinners, and one of them has already mentioned a trip in March. Neither has said what this is. Both have a theory, and the theories probably don’t match.

Defining the relationship, the DTR talk, is the conversation where you stop guessing and say it out loud. This guide covers what a DTR is, what the research does and doesn’t show, where situationships fit, how to work out what you want before you open your mouth, how to bring it up, and how to take any answer, including “not yet” and “no.” (LFG stands for “Looking For Group,” and the DTR is how you find out whether the group is two.)

One thing up front, because it shapes everything below. We went through the research for this guide and found no peer-reviewed study showing that a DTR talk causes happier or longer relationships. We also found none showing that situationships harm well-being. What exists is thinner, more qualified, and more interesting than the confident advice you’ll see elsewhere.

What “defining the relationship” actually means

It means two people telling each other, in words, what they are to each other: dating, exclusive, a couple, or still undecided. Researchers are still working on the definition themselves. A University of Texas at Austin dissertation built on 40 interviews starts from the observation that communication scholars lack a shared definition of the DTR, then offers a working one. It’s an unpublished thesis, so treat it as one researcher’s model.

Here are the working definitions we’ll use. They’re our wording, not a citation:

DTR talk: a conversation where both people say what they want and where they think this is heading.

Exclusive: both people have agreed not to date, or be romantic or sexual with, anyone else.

Situationship: a Florida State University psychologist describes situationships as relationships with passion and intimacy but no formal commitment.

The nonprofit love is respect adds a useful point: casual relationships still count as relationships, they may or may not be exclusive, and either way both people are owed respect. The label matters less than the boundaries, the respect and the feelings underneath it.

What the research does and doesn’t show

The closest thing to a theory of the DTR comes from research on moving in together. In 2006, Stanley, Rhoades and Markman proposed in “Sliding versus deciding” that some couples slide through big transitions without ever deciding them, and that living together can add inertia that carries a couple toward marriage even when the fit is poor. It’s a proposed mechanism, not a measured cause. Nobody has shown that sliding makes relationships fail.

The studies near that idea are correlational. A survey of 1,050 married adults found that people who moved in together before getting engaged reported lower marital satisfaction, dedication and confidence than the other groups. The differences were generally small. A follow-up study of 161 people who went from dating to living together found that most measures of relationship quality and commitment declined after the move while the constraints on leaving rose substantially. Both samples were opposite-sex couples further along than a first month of messages.

Then there’s mismatch. In a national sample of 315 unmarried couples, partners in couples where one person was much more committed than the other, the more committed and the less committed alike, reported worse adjustment and more conflict than partners in balanced couples. Many of those couples were living together or had children. The finding is that mismatch goes with worse outcomes. It doesn’t show a talk would fix it.

So what can we say? Being deliberate about big transitions is a reasonable idea with some correlational support. No study we read gives an ideal time for the talk, and none supports a date count. Anyone telling you “have it by the fifth date” is giving you an opinion.

Situationships: how common, and what we don’t know

In a January 2024 YouGov poll of 1,110 US adults, 39% said they’d been in a situationship, as did 50% of those ages 18 to 34. Treat that as a rough signal. It’s a single online poll, the margin of error isn’t reported, the 18-to-34 group is a small slice, and “situationship” has no standard definition. That last point is why you’ll see wildly different percentages across the internet. We went looking for a Gen Z figure we could trace to a named survey method and couldn’t, so we’re not giving you one.

The academic literature is thin. A 2025 mixed-methods paper, “Are situationships situational?”, studied mostly female college students and, per secondary coverage (we couldn’t open the paper itself), linked emotional investment, talking about the future and prioritizing the relationship to higher satisfaction and stronger commitment within situationships. It’s a small, non-representative, cross-sectional sample, so it can’t tell us that talking about the future causes satisfaction. A conference abstract (not a journal paper) on 20 college students who were “just talking” reported that most assumed non-monogamy by default and presumed monogamy only after an explicit verbal agreement. That’s what one small group said, not a norm.

No study we read shows that situationships damage well-being, and we won’t claim they do. A situationship both people chose is just a different arrangement. Trouble starts when the two of you are playing different games and each assumes it’s the same one.

What singles say they want

The best public data on “saying what you want” is a Pew Research Center survey from July 2022 of 6,034 US adults. Among singles who were looking, 51% said they were open to either a committed relationship or casual dates, 31% wanted only a committed relationship and 17% only casual dating. Pew also found that 57% of all singles weren’t looking for either.

Those numbers aren’t a norm to match. They show that a lot of people are open to more than one outcome, which is exactly the situation where assuming gets you in trouble. If half the people looking could go either way, “we both obviously want the same thing” is a guess.

Before the talk: work out what you want

love is respect advises working out your own feelings before the conversation, and notes that you can set boundaries at any stage and change them as your comfort changes. Its question list for a DTR is a solid starting point, paraphrased here:

Do we both have romantic feelings?

Do we both want commitment?

Do we want time together without friends around?

Are we public about it?

Do we both see this as exclusive?

Answer them for yourself first. Then try compressing your answer to one sentence, like “I want to be exclusive and see where it goes” or “I’m enjoying this and I’m not looking for a label yet.” If you can’t write the sentence, you’ve learned something, and the conversation might be with yourself first.

When to bring it up

Since the research gives no timeline, here’s our judgment, labeled as such. Signs it’s time:

You’re making plans weeks ahead, or meeting each other’s friends.

One of you is about to take a bigger step: a trip, a key to the apartment, a move.

You catch yourself rereading texts for hidden meaning more than you’re enjoying the person.

You want to stop (or keep) seeing other people and you don’t know if they do.

If you’re thinking about moving in, have the talk before the boxes come out. This is where the sliding-versus-deciding research is most relevant. A Pew analysis from August 2026 found that 77% of people ages 38 to 43 had lived with an unmarried romantic partner, and that the median such relationship lasted 18 months. That’s one cohort, born 1980 to 1984, not all adults. Living together is a normal step, which makes it easy to slide into.

How to say it

Johns Hopkins University’s student well-being team offers guidance on talking about relationships. It’s a university blog post, not a study, but the advice is sound: pick a fitting time and place, know your main point, put phones away, speak from your own experience instead of blame, and make it okay for the other person to disagree or decline. Here’s a version in game terms:

Pick a calm moment. Not mid-raid, not after a loss, not at 1 a.m. over text if you can help it. University of Florida counseling guidance on a different conversation, ending a relationship, suggests meeting in person if you can, because text can make hard talks harder. By analogy it applies here. If you don’t feel safe meeting alone, a call or a public place is fine.

Warn them it’s coming. “Can we talk about where this is going? Nothing’s wrong.” The tutorial shouldn’t end in a boss fight.

Go first, with “I.” “I really like where this is. I’d like to be exclusive. What do you want?”

Ask, then listen. You asked a real question, so let the answer be real.

Don’t negotiate the answer. If it isn’t what you hoped, you can ask a clarifying question, but you can’t argue someone into a feeling.

Friday’s post is entirely scripts for this: how to have the DTR talk without winging it. Tuesday digs into why the conversation feels so hard in the first place.

Hearing the answer

There are roughly four outcomes: you want the same thing, they want something else, they’re not ready, or they say no. All four are legitimate answers. “I’m not ready to label this” is a valid answer. “No” is a valid answer. Neither is a puzzle to solve with better wording.

Pressuring someone into a label is not okay. love is respect puts it plainly: “Pressure from a partner to redefine your limits is not okay.” That goes for you too. If you hear “not yet,” your options are to wait on terms you can live with, to ask what “yet” means to them, or to step back. Which one is yours to decide. Staying while privately hoping the answer will change on its own is the one option that tends to hurt. The same UF guidance on ending relationships recommends being honest and direct rather than leaving someone with hope you’ve already decided against, and that goes in both directions.

If a conversation about where things stand involves pressure, fear, or someone getting angry when you set a limit, that matters more than the label. love is respect lists warning signs such as not being able to discuss boundaries because the other person may respond with anger, or demands to cut contact with friends framed as jealousy. You can reach love is respect by calling 1-866-331-9474 or texting LOVEIS to 22522. In immediate danger, call 911.

When the waiting is weighing on you

Uncertainty is stressful, and we’re not going to treat that as a selling point. If worry about where you stand is persistent, hangs around, or is interfering with sleep, work or daily life, the National Institute of Mental Health suggests raising it with a health care provider, and Mayo Clinic says to see a doctor when anxiety interferes with relationships or daily life. A partner or a relationship label is not a treatment, and neither is a dating app. If you’re thinking about suicide or self-harm, call or text 988.

Claims we refused to make

Plenty of popular claims in this area didn’t survive checking, so we left them out:

“X% of Gen Z has been in a situationship.” The many versions we found couldn’t be traced to a named method, and they disagree with each other.

“Have the talk by date N.” We found no named-method public source on DTR timing.

“A DTR talk makes relationships last.” No study we read shows it.

“Situationships are toxic.” No study we read shows that situationships harm well-being.

Trend claims from dating companies’ own reports. Company-internal data with no published method isn’t evidence.

Finding someone to have the conversation with

Gaming is ordinary adult life now. The Entertainment Software Association’s 2026 report says 212.3 million Americans play video games weekly, and the average player is 37.

On LFGdating everyone is a gamer, and every new profile is reviewed by a human, so you can lead with what you play and what you’re looking for. No app can have the DTR talk for you, but it can put you in front of people who already speak the language. Get the LFGdating app for iOS and Android or create your free profile, and compare notes on situationship versus exclusive when you get there.

FAQ: Defining the relationship

What does “define the relationship” mean?

It means telling each other, in words, what you are: dating, exclusive, a couple, or still undecided. Researchers don’t agree on a single definition, and a University of Texas dissertation on the DTR starts from that gap. Our plain version: both people say what they want and where they think this is heading.

When should you have the DTR talk?

There’s no research-backed timeline, and we found no named-method source for a date count. A practical rule: bring it up before a bigger step, like a trip or moving in, or when the uncertainty starts costing you more than the question would. The “sliding versus deciding” paper is a theory about deciding big transitions on purpose.

What is a situationship?

Often described as a relationship with passion and intimacy but no formal commitment, as in this Florida State University explainer. There is no standard definition. A January 2024 YouGov poll found 39% of US adults said they’d been in one, with caveats on method and definition.

What if they say they’re not ready for a label?

That’s a valid answer, and so is “no.” Decide whether you can live with it, ask what “not yet” means to them, or step back, but don’t pressure them. love is respect says pressure to change someone’s limits is not okay.

Does having a DTR talk make a relationship last?

We found no peer-reviewed study showing that it does. Related research on mismatched commitment in 315 couples found worse adjustment when partners differed a lot, but that’s correlational and doesn’t show a conversation would change it. Saying what you want is still the more honest option, and it lets the other person answer for themselves.

Define the relationship without guessing.
