Drifting feels easier, and for a while it is. It just isn&#8217;t a plan, and the closest research we could verify is about inertia: drifting into bigger steps can carry people further than they chose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is the supporting read for our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lfgdating.com\/gamer-dating-blog\/define-the-relationship-gamers-2026\">complete guide to defining the relationship<\/a>. One thing up front: we found no peer-reviewed study showing that having a DTR talk leads to better relationships, and none showing the best moment to have one. Where we say it&#8217;s hard, that&#8217;s our judgment, and we&#8217;ll label it as ours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why it feels like a boss fight with no save point<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These are the pieces we think make the conversation hard. They&#8217;re editorial, not findings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The stakes are lopsided.<\/strong> Asking means you might hear &#8220;no&#8221; or &#8220;not sure&#8221; about something you&#8217;ve been enjoying. Not asking keeps the good version running. Most people take the option that keeps the lobby open.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Nobody shares a vocabulary.<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/repositories.lib.utexas.edu\/handle\/2152\/114769\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">A 2022 University of Texas dissertation based on 40 interviews<\/a> starts from the observation that communication scholars lack a shared definition of the DTR. If researchers are still arguing about what the talk is, a nervous person on a Tuesday night has little chance.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Silence doesn&#8217;t mean what you hope it means.<\/strong> In <a href=\"https:\/\/sswr.confex.com\/sswr\/2025\/webprogram\/Paper57991.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a small interview study of 20 college students who were &#8220;just talking&#8221; to someone<\/a>, most assumed non-monogamy by default and only presumed monogamy after an explicit verbal agreement. That&#8217;s a conference abstract, not a peer-reviewed paper, and a small convenience sample. Still, it&#8217;s a useful warning: your assumption and theirs can both feel obvious and still differ.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>People want different things.<\/strong> In a July 2022 Pew survey of 6,034 US adults, among singles who were looking, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/short-reads\/2023\/02\/08\/for-valentines-day-5-facts-about-single-americans\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">51% were open to either a committed relationship or casual dates, 31% wanted only a committed relationship, and 17% only casual dating<\/a>. Same lobby, three different goals, and no one&#8217;s goal is wrong as long as everyone knows it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What drifting looks like in the research<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The best-known idea here is &#8220;sliding versus deciding.&#8221; In 2006, Stanley, Rhoades and Markman <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1111\/j.1741-3729.2006.00418.x\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">proposed that some couples move in together by sliding rather than deciding, and that inertia can carry them toward bigger commitments<\/a> even when the fit is poor. That&#8217;s a theory about cohabitation, not a measured causal result, so we won&#8217;t say sliding causes anything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Related data comes from couples already living together. In a later study, <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC5956859\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">161 people who moved in together were followed for 20 months, and most measures of relationship quality and interpersonal commitment declined while constraints on leaving rose<\/a>. The sample was small and all opposite-sex couples, so treat it as one data point, not a verdict on living together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Living together is common, which is part of why this matters. A new Pew analysis of one cohort found that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/short-reads\/2026\/08\/12\/most-us-adults-have-lived-with-a-romantic-partner-theyre-not-married-to-by-their-early-40s\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">77% of adults ages 38 to 43 had lived with an unmarried romantic partner, and the median such relationship lasted 18 months<\/a>, counting ones still going. That cohort was born in 1980 to 1984, so it doesn&#8217;t describe everyone, but it does say that moving in is a normal step, not an automatic sign of commitment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One more study is relevant to mismatched expectations. In a national sample of 315 unmarried couples, <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/10.1177\/0265407516672013\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">both the more committed and the less committed partner in lopsided couples reported worse adjustment and more conflict<\/a> than partners in balanced couples. Those couples were further along than a first-month situation, and some lived together or had children. In those couples, mismatch went with worse adjustment for both people. It does not show that a talk would have fixed it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Situationships: what we can and can&#8217;t say<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Florida State&#8217;s Andrea Meltzer <a href=\"https:\/\/news.fsu.edu\/news\/expert-pitches\/2026\/02\/09\/its-complicated-fsu-social-psychologist-discusses-the-rise-in-situationships\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">describes situationships as relationships with passion and intimacy but no formal commitment<\/a>. That&#8217;s a working definition from a university media pitch, not an agreed standard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">How common are they? <a href=\"https:\/\/yougov.com\/en-us\/articles\/48492-half-of-18-to-34-aged-americans-have-been-in-a-situationship\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">A January 2024 YouGov poll of 1,110 US adults found 39% said they had been in a situationship, and 50% of those ages 18 to 34<\/a>. It&#8217;s a single online poll that did not report a margin of error, and we couldn&#8217;t confirm how the term was defined for respondents. Other surveys circulate with much bigger numbers, and we couldn&#8217;t trace them to a primary source, so we left them out. The spread itself says the word means different things to different people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As for what situationships do to people, the honest answer is that the evidence is thin. <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1007\/s12119-025-10402-8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">A 2025 mixed-methods study of college students<\/a>, which we know only through press coverage, reported that emotional investment, talking about the future and prioritizing the relationship went with higher satisfaction and commitment inside situationships. It was small, mostly female and cross-sectional. We found no study showing that situationships harm well-being, so we aren&#8217;t going to tell you they do. If you and your partner both want something open-ended and you&#8217;ve said so, that can be a fine arrangement. The trouble starts when one person is quietly waiting for it to become something else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What the research doesn&#8217;t show<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>That a DTR talk causes better outcomes. We didn&#8217;t find that study.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When to have it. Any &#8220;exclusive by date number X&#8221; figure we found came from company surveys or aggregator pages, so we&#8217;re not repeating one. The big <a href=\"https:\/\/wheatley.byu.edu\/0000019c-4505-d61f-a3dc-dd478a270001\/datingrecession-pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2025 Wheatley Institute and Institute for Family Studies survey of 5,275 unmarried adults ages 22 to 35<\/a> says it did not track how casual dating becomes committed.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>That situationships are harmful, or that wanting a label means anything about your attachment style or character.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Making it less hard<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">None of the following is a research finding. It&#8217;s practical guidance drawn from counseling and campus well-being sources, and our own wording where noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Work out what you want first.<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.loveisrespect.org\/resources\/creating-boundaries-in-romantic-relationships\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">loveisrespect advises sorting out your own feelings and limits before the conversation<\/a>, and notes you can say no without explaining every limit.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Ask plain questions.<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.loveisrespect.org\/resources\/dating-definitions-and-faqs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">loveisrespect suggests asking whether you both have romantic feelings, both want commitment, and both see the relationship as exclusive<\/a>. By exclusive we mean, in our own words, that both of you have agreed not to date or be romantic or sexual with other people.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Pick the moment and own your side.<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/wellbeing.jhu.edu\/blog\/2024\/10\/18\/communication-in-relationships-doesnt-have-to-be-scary\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Johns Hopkins student well-being staff recommend a fitting time and place, speaking from your own experience instead of blame, and making it okay for the other person to disagree or decline<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For ready-to-use wording, see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lfgdating.com\/gamer-dating-blog\/how-to-have-the-dtr-talk-scripts\">our scripts for the DTR talk<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Not ready to label it&#8221; is a valid answer. So is &#8220;no.&#8221; Both are information, and you&#8217;re allowed to act on them, including by deciding this isn&#8217;t for you. Pressuring someone into a label is not okay. loveisrespect puts it this way: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.loveisrespect.org\/resources\/creating-boundaries-in-romantic-relationships\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8220;Pressure from a partner to redefine your limits is not okay.&#8221;<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If a conversation about where things stand involves pressure, fear, or someone getting angry when you set a limit, you can reach love is respect by calling 1-866-331-9474 or texting LOVEIS to 22522. In immediate danger, call 911. If you are thinking about suicide or self-harm, call or text 988.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A label is not a treatment<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Uncertainty about a relationship can be stressful, and that stress is ordinary. A partner or a relationship label is not a treatment for anxiety, low mood or loneliness, and finding one is not a plan for managing them. If worry or low mood is persistent or getting in the way of daily life, it&#8217;s worth raising with a health care provider. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nimh.nih.gov\/health\/publications\/tips-for-talking-with-your-health-care-provider\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Institute of Mental Health has tips for that conversation<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/anxiety\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20350961\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mayo Clinic lists when to see a doctor about anxiety<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Where this leaves you<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The DTR talk is hard because it&#8217;s a real risk with no map. The research we trust says little about how to run it and nothing about when, but the one idea with some support is that drifting into bigger steps can carry couples further than either of them decided.
