This Week on LFGdating: Gifts for Player Two

Gift season is here, and this week on the LFGdating blog we tackled it from every angle: what to buy, how much to spend, what the research says, and how to hand it over without making it weird. Here’s the whole week in one place, with links to everything.

Monday: the complete gift guide

Our complete guide to gifts for a gamer partner covers when a gift makes sense, what the research says about price and experiences, ten gift ideas, what to avoid, and an FAQ. It’s the best starting point.

Tuesday: how much to spend

If you’re early in dating and doing math in your head, this post explains why price matters less to recipients than givers think, and gives you a framework for setting a budget without guessing.

Wednesday: experiences vs. things

We compared experience gifts and material gifts using one research team’s findings, then looked at how gaming blurs the line between the two. The best answer is often a hybrid.

Thursday: a note from the founders

Casey and Pat wrote about why the best gift we get is a cancel email, and what that tells you about attention, love, and gifts.

Friday: the five-step plan

When you have the gift and need to hand it over, our five-step plan covers the check-in, the ground rules, the moment, what to say, and how to receive theirs.

Saturday: the numbers

For readers who like receipts, the data post pulls public figures on gifting research, retail trends, and gaming, links each to its source, and lists the claims we refused to repeat.

Your pre-gift checklist, short form

  • Know what you are to each other before you give anything big.
  • Ask how your partner wants to handle gifts this year.
  • Set a ceiling before you browse and stick to it.
  • Pick something specific that shows you were listening.
  • Add a note with one real sentence.
  • Give it in a relaxed moment, and receive theirs with thanks.

That’s the whole week in six lines. If you want the long versions, they’re all linked above.

The one-paragraph version

Price isn’t what recipients respond to, so don’t blow your budget. Shared experiences do more for relationships than objects, so build a moment around the gift. Talk about gifts first, especially early in dating. Add one real sentence to the note, and receive theirs with attention. None of this needs a perfect plan, only a shared one.

What we don’t know

None of the research we found is specific to gamers or to couples who met online, so we applied it by analogy and said so. We also found no measured dollar total behind the popular “trillion-dollar holiday” line, and we left it out. If you’ve seen better evidence, send it our way.

A word on timing

Gift season starts early and ends fast. If you’re going to order something, order it before the shipping rush. If you’re building an experience instead, put a date on the calendar now, because holiday weekends fill up quickly. And if the person you’d give a gift to is still hypothetical, that’s fine. There’s a long season ahead.

Your move

If you already have someone to shop for, you’re set. If you’re still looking, Player Two is out there. Two ways in:

If you only read one post from this week, make it the Monday guide. If you only do one thing, ask your partner how they want to handle gifts this year. That single conversation solves most of the stress.

Next week we start a new theme: meeting the family for the holidays, starting with our complete guide. Until then, be kind, and bring snacks.
