Proximity Apps vs. Shared-Interest Dating: Why “Within 25 Miles” Is the Wrong Filter for Gamers

Every mainstream dating app ships with the same hidden assumption baked into its very first filter: the love of your life lives within 25 miles of your couch. Adjust the slider all you want — the architecture believes distance is the enemy and proximity is the product.

For some people, that assumption is fine. For gamers, it’s quietly catastrophic. Today we’re comparing the two structural models of online dating — proximity-first and shared-interest-first — and making the case that the industry default gets our community exactly backwards.

The default assumption: love is a radius

Proximity-first design descends from a reasonable idea: dating ends in meeting, meeting requires travel, so minimize travel. Feed the user the nearest plausible faces, sorted by distance, and let chemistry sort out the rest.

Notice what this optimizes for: logistics. Not compatibility, not shared values, not the thing you’d actually spend a life doing together. The radius model treats who a person is as tiebreaker data and where they are as the main event.

What proximity-first gets right

Fair is fair: logistics matter. Same-city matches mean spontaneous dates, no airfare, and no time-zone math. If your interests are broadly shared by the general population — food, fitness, live music — the nearest 25 miles contain thousands of plausible matches, and the radius model serves you reasonably well. The model isn’t stupid. It’s just built for a specific kind of user: someone whose defining interests are evenly distributed across every zip code.

What it costs gamers specifically

Gamers are not evenly distributed — not the ones for whom gaming is an identity rather than an occasional pastime. Your people are real and numerous, but they’re spread across the entire map, clustered in servers instead of suburbs.

Run the mental math. Take your town, draw the 25-mile circle, and start filtering: single, age-compatible, actually a gamer gamer — not “I played a mobile puzzle game once” — orientation-compatible, and looking for a relationship. And among partnered adults under 30, 1 in 5 met their partner on a dating site or app. The generation doing the most online dating is also the generation most fluent in long-distance connection. The radius was always a design choice, not a law of nature.
