How to Spot a Fake Profile on a Dating Site

Fake profiles, are the ultimate bane of any dating site that is worth it. Sure, some dating sites create their own fake profiles, none more recently caught than Ashley Madison. Red flags abound in fake profiles: stock photos, incoherent text, and complete lack of text, among others.

Sometimes people creating fake profiles are able to slip through the screening process. It happens. Fake profiles ultimately diminish the user experience, and in doing so, lower the ceiling of that dating site’s potential.

LFGdating, like our major competitors Match, OKCupid and Tinder, goes to great lengths to stop fake profiles from being posted. What red flags do we typically see that allows us to mark a profile as fake?

Does the profile have a stock photo? We reverse image search the picture. This is the quickest way for us to spot a fake profile.

Are all photos basically the same picture at different angles? A couple years ago this began cropping up, and since then, it’s less prevalent. Still, this does nothing to verify an authentic profile.

Does the profile contain incoherent text? One of the benefits of a co-founder having an English degree is that proofing comes easy. Are commas in mismatching places, separating lists? Are commas used instead of periods? Does the text have no pattern to grammatical errors? If any of the above happens, it’s a red flag.

Does the profile contain zero information other than a picture that could be fake? When this is the case, we may reach out to the member, asking them to complete their profile. If there is no follow up, that doesn’t help their cause.

Does the username end with words such as “likes” or “loves” or “123?” Unfortunately we’ve had to delete a number fake profiles. The majority of the profiles we have flagged as fake contain the above username endings.

We want you to have the best experience possible, and if you’re able to spot fake profiles easier now than before, than you’re in better shape!
